Audubon

In Camden County, New Jersey, there is a borough called Audubon. This borough has a population of over 8,000 residents. First settled in the late 17^th century by John Low, the land was predominantly used for farms and mills. The surrounding areas were diverse in nature and heavily wooded, with small streams feeding into the Delaware River. Audubon is the most awarded per capita of any town in the entire United States and has been coined as the “Most Patriotic Small Town in America” as the borough is home to three Medal of Honor recipients. Samuel M. Sampler was a soldier for the US Army that was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during World War I. Edward Clyde Benfold was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Battle of Bunker Hill in the Korean War. Nelson Vogel Brittin was also posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Korean War. The three of them are honored by a memorial in Audubon High School where they each graduated from. Throughout the boroughs history, the high school sports programs have had terrific triumph statewide. What began as an area of farms with few residents has grown into the quiet family town that it is today.
