Blackwood

Blackwood is a small unincorporated community home to about 4,500 people within Gloucester Township of  Camden County, New Jersey. John Blackwood was an immigrant from Scotland who settled in 1750, where he established mills. This community was initially known as Blackwoodtown and acted as a crossroads village along the Black Horse Pike well into the nineteenth century. The area served as a local government and transportation center by the 1830s. After that, Uriah Norcross established a stagecoach line between Camden and Woodbury, stopping at a tavern in Blackwoodtown. The arrival of the Camden County Railroad in 1891 led to further development within the community. Now, Blackwood is the location of the main campus for Camden County College. What was formerly known as the Blackwood Railroad Trail is now known as the Gloucester Township Health and Fitness Trail. The bikeway is constructed on an abandoned railroad right-of-way and connects neighborhoods with schools and recreational facilities. One of the trail’s biggest highlights is the restored railroad caboose adjacent to the right-of-way near West Church Street.
