Bloomsbury, NJ Propane

One of the ten boroughs of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Bloomsbury is located within the county’s Northwest area and is home to 870 residents. Spanning just under one sq mile, Bloomsbury was incorporated in 1905 from portions of Bethlehem Township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. Bloomsbury was once known as “Johnson’s Iron Works,” and was owned by Robert Johnson on the river’s north bank. The borough’s current name comes from the Bloom family, who was influential in the town’s early history. Other residents believe the borough’s name is derived from the iron ore processing in the area that was turned into wrought iron, also known as “blooms.”

The Bloomsbury School District currently serves students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade at Bloomsbury Public School. During the 2018-2019 school year, the school district had an enrollment of 94 students at the district’s one school. Today, the district is one of ten schools in the state that participates in the Interdistrict Public School Choice Program. Approved in 1999, the program allows non-resident students to participate in a lottery where tuition is paid for by the New Jersey Department of Education. Students above the age of 12/13 attend Phillipsburg High School in Phillipsburg in Warren County. The school also serves students from Alpha, Greenwich Township, Lopatcong Township, and Pohatcong Township. During the 2018-2019 school year, the high school had a total enrollment of 1,650 students.

While its education system remains at the forefront of Bloomsbury’s mission, in recent years, Bloomsbury has taken steps to improve local transportation as well. As of May 2010, Bloomsbury had more than 6.5 miles of roadways maintained by the municipality, Hunterdon County, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The major county road that passes through the borough remains CR 579; however, several other major roads run through the area, including Interstate 78, US Route 22, and Route 173.
