Bryn Mawr

Bryn Mawr is a census-designated place in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania with a population of about 3,779 people and a total area of .6 square miles. The name Bryn Mawr means “big hill” in Welsh and the name also serves as a mailing address for other towns in Radnor Township and Haverford Township in Delaware County. Bryn Mawr is named for an estate in Wales near Dolgellau. The estate was owned by a man named Rowland Ellis, a Welsh Quaker that emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1686. 

Bryn Mawr is home to Bryn Mawr College, a women’s liberal arts college that was founded as a Quaker institution in 1885. Bryn Mawr is a part of the Seven Sister Colleges and the Tri-College Consortium. Bryn Mawr College has an enrollment of about 1,350 undergraduate students and 450 graduate students, and it was the first women’s college to allow its students to graduate in education through a Ph.D. Bryn Mawr College was named one of the most beautiful college campuses by Travel+Leisure in 2011, and it still holds up that reputation. The school has a ton of buildings including student residences, libraries, a memorial garden for Bianca Noel Taft, the Marjorie Walter Goodhart Theater, and the Deanery. Bryn Mawr College has had many notable people who graduated from the school, as well as people who taught the students. These people include the 28th President Woodrow Wilson, who taught government.
