Byram Township

Byram Township is a township in Sussex County, New Jersey with a population of around 8,350 people and a total area of around 22.75 square miles, 1.19 square miles of that being water. The township was made after an act by the New Jersey General Assembly on February 5, 1798, took parts from Newton Township and it was incorporated on February 21, 1798. The township became part of New Jersey’s initial group of 104 townships, and it was named after the Byram Family. Early settlers of the area, the Byram Family weren’t always what the town was named after. Before the township was called Byram around the time of the American Revolutionary War, the township was called Lockwood, and the Lockwood Tavern kept that name until it was destroyed in 2015.
