Cherry Hill

The township known as Cherry Hill in Camden County, New Jersey, was originally settled by the Lenni-Lenape people before the first settlers from England displaced them. They peacefully co-existed with the followers of William Penn, who arrived in the late 1600s. The first settlement was a small cluster of homes named Colestown, in the perimeters of the Colestown Cemetery on the corner of Route 41 and Church Road. The village contained two stores, a blacksmith shop, several dwellings, a church, and a cemetery. The Colestown Cemetery is the only remnant of this long-vanished hamlet. In 1695, the English formed the community of Delaware Township, one of the original townships of old Gloucester County. The community had a long and prosperous existence as an agricultural center and mill town. Throughout the early years of the 20th century and particularly following World War I, bordering Philadelphia suburbs expanded, blurring the lines between Delaware Township and its neighbors. Today, Cherry Hill remains South Jersey’s economic center.
