Cranbury

Home to almost 4,000 residents, Cranbury, New Jersey, is best known for its historical significance during the American Revolutionary War and its modern, desirable neighborhoods. One of the most southern townships in Middlesex County, Cranbury settlement dates back to 1698 when a deed for a sale of land and improvement was purchased in present-day downtown Cranbury.  Throughout its history, Cranbury has been home to notable historical figures such as Alexander Hamilton and Marquis de Lafayette, who used Cranbury as a headquarters during the majority of the American Revolutionary War. During their time in Cranbury, Alexander Hamilton and Marquis de Lafayette were visited by General George Washington in June 1778. While visiting, General George Washington is said to have ordered Cranbury maps to be made showing the presence of a town church, mill, and more than 20 other buildings to confuse the British soldiers. Additionally, George Washing used Cranbury as a headquarters while preparing for the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, which later became a turning point for the war. In 1833, the Hightstown rail accident took place near Cranbury. Among the passengers was the 6th President of the United States, John Quincy Adams, Irish actor Tyrone Power, and business magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt. 

Before 1869, the township was spelled as “Cranberry,” however, Rev Joseph G. Summer asked that the spelling be changed and that the suffix “bury” was more appropriate. Since its foundation, the township’s name has been attributed to the wild cranberries that grow in the area. Cranbury was incorporated as a township by New Jersey Legislature on March 7, 1872, from Monroe Township and South Brunswick Township portions. In 1919, portions of Cranbury were taken to help form Plainsboro, a township to the west of Cranbury. The majority of Cranbury’s Main Street buildings date back to the 18th and 19th century leading to the entire downtown area being designated a Historic District in September 1980 by the National Register of Historic Places.
