Sumneytown, PA Propane

Sumneytown is a town in the Marlborough Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The Unami Creek forms its natural SE boundary with Salford and Upper Salford Townships and flows SW into the Perkiomen Creek. In 1741, Marlboro Township was partitioned from the original Salford Township. At some point in time after the 1940 U.S. Federal Census, the township was officially renamed Marlborough Township. Some historical and genealogical references retain the early spelling of the community. The historic Kings Highway passed through Sumneytown and the portion from there north to the Lehigh County line is named Geryville Pike today. The village was named for early settler Issac Sumney, who opened the Red Lion there in 1762. In 1848 the Sumneytown and Spring House Turnpike was opened to Marlborough and resulted in an influx of tourism from the wealthy families of Philadelphia. Some of the original powder mills were rebuilt as flour and oil mills. Cigar manufacturing arrived along with other small businesses. Hand quarries of the dense rock supplied stone block for Old Germantown Pike. Remnants of the origins of Sumneytown are everywhere. The woodlands are second-growth and are part of the “Highlands”, the largest contiguous forest on the eastern coast, running from Connecticut to New Jersey. Two historic one-lane stone arch bridges crossing the Unami Creek are eligible for the National Registry. The Unami Creek Watershed is one of only two creeks in Montgomery County protected as a High-Quality Stream by the state of Pennsylvania.
