Flourtown is a census-designated place in the Springfield Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1743, the community was so named on account of a flouring mill near the original town site. William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, reserved Springfield Township as one of his family's original manors in the 1680s. Springfield Township is a 6.79 square mile suburban community located along the Northwest border of the City of Philadelphia. Situated in the Southeastern part of Montgomery County, Springfield is surrounded by the Townships of Abington, Cheltenham, Upper Dublin and Whitemarsh, as well as the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia. Throughout the 18th century, farming was the principal occupation in the township closely followed by lime burning and milling. An ample flow of water found in the Wissahickon Creek and its tributaries supported at least three local mills. It was from this industry that "Flourtown" took its name. In 1940, the Pennsylvania guide, compiled by the Writers' Program of the Works Progress Administration, noted that regional farmers had previously come to the area to buy supplies and "have their wheat ground by the millers along the Wissahickon. Most of the houses are old, many dating to colonial times. Flourtown's sole commercial activity is carried on by a few antique shops.
