Previously settled by the Lenape Native Americans, the area’s European settlement began during the American Revolutionary War. The area has previously held various names, including Spruce Run Mills, Sodom, and Eveland’s Tavern for tavern keeper John Eveland. The community and post office officially took the name Glen Gardner in 1871 to mark the Spruce Run Glen and in honor of the Gardner brothers, who owned a factory in the area.
