Hopewell Township, NJ Propane

Hopewell Township is located within the northern sector of Mercer County. Since its foundation, Hopewell Township has attracted residents thanks to its prime location between the New York Metropolitan area and Philadelphia Metropolitan Area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the Hopewell Township’s population has Beene listed as just over 17,000 residents, an increase of nearly 1000 residents in 10 years. The township’s history dates back to February 1700, when the area was documented as part of Burlington County. One of the earliest settlers of the area was George Woolsey of Jamaica, Queens. George Woolsey’s father was one of the earliest pre-1650 settlers of “New Amsterdam,” or modern-day Manhattan.

The township name was derived from one of two portions of 800 acres of property owned by William Trent,  a prominent trader and merchant within Pennsylvania and New Jersey during the 18th century. The land was formally set off to Hunterdon County in 1714. Trenton Township was developed from this estate and would later become the City of Trenton. Hopewell Township was incorporated by Royal charter during 1755 but was re-incorporated in 1798 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. Hopewell Township became part of Mercer County in 1838 when the county was created. Later, portions of Hopewell were used to create Marion Township in 1838 but reverted to Hopewell the following year.

Within Hopewell Township lies Washington Crossing, where George Washington and the Continental Army crossed from Pennsylvania to attack Hessian forces located in Trenton. Once George Washington forces landed in Hopewell Township, they marched to Trenton on December 26, 1776, and fought in the Battle of Trenton.
