Port Murray, NJ Propane

One of the smallest unincorporated communities in New Jersey, Port Murray is located within Mansfield Township in Warren County, New Jersey. The community’s total area measures just 0.168 sq miles and, as of the 2010 census, has a total population of 129 people. Port Murray’s name comes from its location on the Morris Canal and James Boyles Murray, the third president of the Morris Canal Banking Company. The Port Murray Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 7th, 1996. The Port Murray former station on the Morris and Essex Railroad, Port Murray Historic District Carpenter Gothic architecture, and the Canal Store on Morris Canal are listed on the registry.

Port Murray previously had a station on the Morris and Essex Railroad, which ran 67 miles from Port Murray to New York City. The Morris and Essex Railroad ran across northern New Jersey and later became part of the mainline of Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad. The railroad was incorporated in 1835 to build a line from Newark to Morristown. The railroad was eventually merged into the DL&W in 1945, where service to Port Murray soon ended.

The Morris Canal was a 107-mile common carrier coal canal that ran across northern New Jersey, which connected two industrial canals at Easton, PA, and Phillipsburg, New Jersey. During its creation in 1831, the canal was considered an ingenious technological marvel for its inclusion of water-driven inclined planes that it used to cross the north New Jersey hills. The canal was primarily built to service the coal industry and move coal between eastern cities. The Morris Canal was heavily used until the 1860m; however, as many railroads began to be used for coal transportation, the canal was leased to the Lehigh Valley railroad in 1871. The canal was later formally abandoned in 1924. Today, plans for portions of the canal to be used for pedestrians and cyclists are underway, with the canal being added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1974.
