A municipality with a borough form of government, Princeton is located with Mercer County and most widely known for being the location of Princeton University. As of the 2010 United States Census, the municipality’s total population was 28,572, an increase from the 16,265 listed during the 2000 United States Census. Princeton borders several municipalities of Hopewell Township, including Lawrence, West Windsor Townships, Plainsboro Township, South Brunswick Township in Middlesex County, Franklin Township, and Montgomery Township.

Ranked 15 out of the top 100 towns to live in by Money magazine in 2005, Princeton is known for its picturesque homes and quiet, comfortable living. The area is one hour away from Philadelphia and New York City, making it a prime location for commuter families.

The Lenin Lenape Native Americans were believed to be the earliest identifiable inhabitants of the area before Europeans came to the area during the late 17th century. Henry Greenland is considered to be the first European to build his home in the municipality and would go on to create a tavern where representatives of West and East Jersey met to finalize the boundaries between their two provinces. Princeton received its name in 1724 from local residents. While there is no known documentation, the municipality is thought to be named after King William III, Prince William of Orange of the House of Nassau.

Home to Ivy League Princeton University. The university’s main campus has its historic center located on Nassau Street, and its campus stretches across 500 acres throughout the municipality. Founded in 1746 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, as the College of New Jersey, today, Princeton is the fourth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, following Harvard University, College of William and Mary, and Yale University. As of 2020, 69 Nobel laureates, 15 Field Medalists, 14 Turing Award laureates have been affiliated with Princeton University alumni. Princeton University has also produced two US Presidents, 12 US Supreme Court Justices, and numerous billionaires and political leaders.
