Readington, NJ Propane

Located within the easternmost portion of Hunterdon County is Readington Township. Readington Township’s total population was listed as more than 16,000 residents in the 2010 United States Census, almost a 20% increase from the township’s population recorded in the 1990 census. Formed by King George II’s Royal charter, Reading township was formed in 1730 from portions of Amwell Township and was the first township created after Hunterdon to be established as an independent county. In 1798, the township was incorporated as Readington Township, on the initial 104 New Jersey townships. The township is officially named after John Reading, the first native-born governor of the British Province of New Jersey and one of the founders and trustees of the College of New Jersey, later Princeton University.

The township, which covers more than 48 square miles, covers nearly 11% of the county’s area and is the largest township located within Hunterdon. Today, the township borders Clinton Township, Raritan Township, Tewksbury Township, Branchburg, and Hillsborough Township. Home to several museums and art programs, one of Readington’s premiere museums is Taylor’s Mill. Built close to 1760 by John Taylor, Taylor’s Mill is the only remaining pre-revolutionary mill in the township and was most notably used to provide provisions to troops during the Revolutionary War.

Reading Township is well known for its exemplary school district, The Reading Township Public Schools. The district in 2019 was reported to have a total enrollment of 1,495 students throughout the district’s four schools. The schools within the district are Three Bridges School, which serves students from kindergarten to third grade; Whitehouse School also serves students from kindergarten to third grade; Holland Brook School serves grades 4-5; and Readington Middle School serves grades 6-8. Eighth-grade students in Hunterdon County are eligible to apply to the Hunterdon County Vocational School District, a county-wide vocational school district that offers technical programs to local high schools.
