Sergeantsville

Sergeantsville is a historic settlement that is part of Delaware Township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Located at the northwestern edge of the rolling Amwell Valley in southern Hunterdon County, the site of what would become Sergeantsville was initially settled in 1700 by a Mr. Thatcher. The community was later named after the American Revolutionary War soldier, Charles Sergeant, to honor the Sergeant family who were prominent shopkeepers of the area at the time. Sergeantsville was officially created in 1827 with the establishment of their first post office. Until that time, this largely rural area was known as “Skunktown”, perhaps because the town served as a market center for skunk pelts. The community is home to the oldest remaining covered bridge in New Jersey, the Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge. 

The village exemplifies the small agglomerate crossroads settlements that developed in the region during the 18th and 19th centuries to serve the dispersed agricultural community. As a result of its relatively isolated location, Sergeantsville experienced little development during the second half of the 20th century, which effectively served to preserve much of its historic character into the 21st century.
