Stockton

On the far east side of Hunterdon County, New Jersey is the borough, Stockton, that sits along the side of the Delaware River. Stockton was first known as Reading Ferry and subsequently Howell’s Ferry. The arrival of the railroad changed the name to Centre Bridge Station. In 1851, the creation of a post office is what catalyzed the renaming to Stockton. The community was named after the U.S. Senator Robert Field Stockton, who was instrumental in the creation of the Delaware and Raritan Canal. The tiny town remains today as it was in the eighteenth century, for all its small size and charm, the town is presided over by an old inn. The Stockton Inn  was established in 1710 and is the inn that was the inspiration for Richard Rodger’s song “There’s a Small Hotel (with a wishing well)” sung in the Broadway play On Your Toes. Stockton is also home to the Delaware River Mill Society, a private nonprofit organization that values the restoration, maintenance, and operation of the historic John Prall Jr. House and the Prallsville Mills Complex, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and became part of the D & R Canal State Park in 1973.
