Swarthmore

Swarthmore, a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, is home to around 6,200 residents. Originally, the borough was a part of Springfield Township, and the convenient rail service from Philadelphia in the 1880s made going to Swarthmore more desirable. Swarthmore was also originally called Westdale to honor painter Benjamin West who was a notable wary resident of the borough. Swarthmore is served by the Wallingford-Swarthmore school district and it has one private school, George Crothers Memorial School. The district was formed in 1983 after a merger between the Nether Providence School District and Swarthmore-Rutledge School District. 

The reason for the borough’s name change was because of the founding of Swarthmore College in 1864, although the first classes weren’t held until 1869. Swarthmore college is a Private Liberal Arts college, known for being one of the first coeducational institutions. Despite the size of the school, Swarthmore college is a prestigious institution. While staying in Swarthmore, you may be inclined to get some fresh produce from the Swarthmore Farmers Market. The market has positive reviews, stating that the market has pleasant music floating through the mart so that you can have a calming shopping experience, along with a ton of products, such as fresh baked goods, produce, wine, meats and delicacies, and art.
