Perth Amboy, NJ Propane
Located in Middlesex County lies Perth Amboy,
otherwise known as the “City by the Bay,” which refers to its location near the
Raritan Bay. During the 2010 United States Census, the total recorded residents
of Perth Amboy were listed as 50,814 people, making the city the 758 most
populated city in the United States. Originally the capital of the Province of
New Jersey form 1686 to 1776, today Perth Amboy is well known for being a
resort town.
Similar to other areas in New Jersey, the
earliest settlers of Perth Amboy were the Lenape Native Americas, who called
the area Ompoge, meaning “level ground.” In 1683, Scottish colonists came to
the area and named it “New Perth” after James Drummond, 4th Earl of Perth, and
gradually the two names merged to create Perth Amboy. Perth Amboy was formed by
Royal charter in 1718 on King George the First’s orders and reaffirmed its
status in 1784 after America gained independence from Great Britain. One of the
most historically significant buildings within Perth Amboy is the Proprietary
House, which was the home of William Franklin, the last Royal Governor of New Jersey
as well as the estranged son of Benjamin Franklin, who at one point tried to
convince his son to join the Colonial cause. During the Revolutionary War,
William Franklin was held at Propertiaery House until he was tried and
convicted of treason in 1776.
In the mid 19th century, Perth Amboy became an
industrial hub and became home to factories such as A. Hall and Sons Terra
Cotta, Guggenheim and Sons, and Copper Works Smelting Company. These factories
grew Perth Amboy’s economy and brought a higher population to the city. Growth
continued in the area thanks to the Lehigh Valley Railroad and coal shipping,
which brought new employment to the city as well as new residents.
Today, Perth Amboy has become well known throughout the east coast for its resort living and for being the hometown of Jon Bon Jovi, lead singer of the band Bon Jovi. Jon Bon Jovi, otherwise known as John Francis Bongiovi Jr. was born in Perth Amboy in March 1962 and attended St. Joseph High School and Sayreville War Memorial High School in Parlin, New Jersey. Jon Bon Jovi’s most widely recognized songs include Livin’ on a Prayer, It’s My Life, and You Give Love A Bad Name.
