Should My Propane Tank Be Above or Below Ground?

When you envision residential propane service, your brain probably provides you with two differing images: a tank standing in your yard and a small box with a panel sticking up from the ground. These are the options you have when you get a propane tank – above or below ground. But is there a difference between them (aside from the obvious) and is one more advantageous than the other? Below, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of both types.

First and foremost, it’s important to realize that above ground and below ground propane tanks function the same way and even include the same basic features. The placement of some of these features is just different, due to the constraints of the underground variety. Both kinds can also hold the same amount of propane, though our local PA suppliers only fill to about 80% capacity so that there is room for expansion in case of temperature fluctuations. Thus, in terms of pure functionality, each will be as efficient as the other. Now, on to the pros and cons.

The Above Ground Tank

The major issue with the above ground tank? Some people might consider it an eyesore or worse, see it as taking up space that could be devoted to an inground pool, trampoline or gazebo. But here’s the thing: if you install an underground propane tank, you aren’t supposed to put anything aside from dirt on top of it. So, essentially, an above ground tank won’t take up any more or less structural space than its below-ground counterpart. However, these tanks can sometimes get in the way of yardwork, recreation, and other activities (depending on their placement, of course).

The main issue for many people is the attractiveness of the tank. Whether the container sitting on your lawn bothers you or not will depend almost entirely on your aesthetic preferences and where you end up placing it. If the container is discreetly hidden behind some bushes, you may not care; if it’s just squatting in the middle of your yard, you may grit your teeth every time you look at it. You’ll have to weigh your options carefully before making a decision.

The Below Ground Tank

For those who take issue with the attractiveness of the above ground tank, the below ground variety is the obvious choice. We have a quick video here that shows you exactly how the underground installation process works here at Gas Tec:

The advantage of this type of tank is that your yard can go back to the way it was before – you just might have to plant a little new grass. They also don’t take long to install (only about 3-4 hours) and, because propane is a safe substance, a leak (however unlikely), would not harm the local water or soil.

The disadvantage that these tanks have is negligible. They do cost a bit more, simply because of the excavation and extra labor that goes into the process, but once done, the tank will cost the same amount as an above ground one – with the added bonus of being subtly concealed beneath the ground! In addition, with proper materials, coating, and anchoring provided by the experts at Gas Tec, you can avoid all of the potential pitfalls of underground installations.

3 Things Every Propane Supplier Should Offer (but many don’t)

With so many propane suppliers in PA, you’d think that they’d all be following basic best practices by now. Unfortunately, the truth is that the level of service provided by these companies can vary tremendously. So, how do you know which companies will give you the best value for your money? Here are three things you should expect your propane supplier to provide—and if they don’t, keep looking.

1.  Online ordering – We understand how busy modern life can be, and the last thing that you need is to have to make an involved phone call every time you need a propane delivery. That’s why a good propane supplier will offer easy online ordering options for your convenience. With online ordering, a few clicks of a button will get you the supplies you need, leaving you more time and less frustration all around.

2.  Scheduled at-home delivery – For most homeowners, a fixed delivery schedule makes the most sense. Some households use a whole home propane system that meets most or all of their energy needs. That usually means their propane usage is pretty consistent from month to month, and having propane refilled on a set schedule is an easy way to have one less thing to worry about on their to-do list. When setting up propane service, make sure that you mention any factors that might change your propane requirements from month to month. For instance, in the summer, you may need extra propane for heating your pool. Mention this and other similar issues and a good company will adjust accordingly.

3.  Competitive Pricing – There are a lot of companies out there offering propane services, but many of them find ways to mark up prices at great benefit to themselves, but to the detriment of the customer. For instance, many bad companies will start off with a great introductory rate, only to raise that rate astronomically after a bit of time has passed. A good company offers fair pricing. Market-based prices are often a great thing for homeowners, but the best companies will also have price programs that offer businesses and larger communities some protection and consistency.

Brace Yourself, Summer is Coming

As the snow melts and spring finally begins to settle in, it’s time to break out the power washer, dig out the patio furniture, and get ready for those sweltering kick back days of summer.

Here’s our advice for creating an inviting area that can be enjoyed all throughout the spring and summer seasons.

Start a Garden

While having a lavish greenhouse isn’t necessary, having a small garden can be a key aesthetic factor in livening up the atmosphere of any outdoor area.

More importantly, gardening is healthy for you. This socially acceptable form of playing in the dirt is known to relieve stress, while working outside in the sun has been known to alleviate symptoms of depression.

Being able to cook with ingredients you’ve grown also allows you to control and limit the kinds of chemicals and pesticides that are added to you food.

Aside from the aesthetic and medical benefits of adding greenery and color to your back yard patio, growing fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, basil, and other edibles and herbs has the added benefit of bringing both flavor and pride to your summer barbeques.

Get yourself a grill

In today’s health-conscious world, grilling foods is one of the most acceptable and beneficial ways to prepare an enormous variety of meals without feeling pigeonholed into an overly restrictive dietary mentality. The benefits of grilling outweigh most other forms of household cooking. For example, marinating meat before grilling is known to dramatically decrease the presence of cancer causing chemicals in cooked foods.

Gas grilling also allows for more fine-tuned control of heat distribution, which makes it perfect for the health-conscious cooking style known as “slow and low.” Take the time to research gas distributers in your area, as propane suppliers in PA and various other states might offer different kinds of services depending on your grill (commercial, private, industrial, etc.).

Maintain Patio Furniture

Different kinds of patio furniture require different care and maintenance. Always make sure the furniture you invest in is solid and sturdy, then clean and test it regularly — nothing spices up a get together quite like someone falling backwards out of the plastic chairs you picked up at the dollar store.

When not in use, all patio furniture should be kept covered or in a storage unit or garage. This ensures protection from damage caused by the elements and local wildlife. It will extend the life of your patio furniture for years to come and will reduce overall clutter in the festive space you are attempting to furnish.

Before setting up any tables, chairs or umbrellas, make sure any damage caused by weather or wear is repaired, or the items replaced.
