Collingswood

Just east of Center City, Philadelphia is Collingswood, a borough in Camden County, New Jersey that is home to about 13,000 people. Due in part to its Quaker history, the community of Collingswood was founded as a dry town, which means that no restaurants serve alcohol. More recently in 2015, the town introduced an ordinance that permits craft breweries to operates in the town without serving food. Prior to the Quakers settling there, the land was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. Much of what is now Collingswood was a farm owned by members of the Collings family during the 18th and 19th Centuries. Based on the results from a referendum held in 1888, Collingswood was incorporated as a borough by the act of the New Jersey Legislature. That same year, town resident Edward Collings Knight, a wealthy sugar, real estate, and railroad magnate, donated the land that became Knight Park. Knight was a descendant of the Collings family for whom the borough is named. Collingswood has several historic homes including the 1820s-era house of the Collings family, known as the Collings-Knight homestead, which stands at the corner of Browning Road and Collings Avenue, shadowed by the Parkview at Collingswood apartment homes.
