Oldwick

Oldwick is one of several unincorporated communities located with Tewksbury Township in Hunterdon County. As of the 2000 United States Census, Oldwick has a total population of 144 residents within 68 housing units. Formerly known as New Germantown, the community has a combination of Victorian, Federal, New England, and Georgian style homes, some of which are protected by historic legislation. One of the many historic sites within Oldwick includes Kline Farmhouse and the Oldwick Historic District. 

Within Oldwick lies Zion Lutheran Church, the site of the oldest Lutheran parish in New Jersey. Justus Falckner of New York, one of the first Lutheran clergymen ordained in America, led the Zion Lutheran Church worship at the founding ceremony on August 1, 1714. Falckner, an immigrant from Saxony, was ordained at Gloria Dei Church in South Philadelphia and most notably accepted power of attorney to sell the land of William Penn. Oldwick is also the corporate headquarters of the A.M. Best rating agency as well as Mane Stream, formerly the Somerset Hills Handicapped Riding Center. 

Oldwick Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in November of 1988 and added 127 contributing buildings, 12 contributing structures, and one contributing site to the register. The district spans 170 acres and includes a variety of styles and buildings from history. Some of the many historic buildings include:

 Oldwick is located within Tewksbury Township, which was established in 1798 and named for Tewkesbury, England. Tewksbury is most well known for being one of the state’s highest-income communities. Some of Oldwick and Tewksbury Township’s most notable residents include Harriet Adams, the author most well known for writing the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series. Famous actor James Gandolfini, an actor best known for playing Tony Soprano in The Sopranos, was born Westwood just outside of Tewkesbury.
